More about Indy ...

AKA the Spinning dog

Indy was Alan & Kathy Daniels’ first  Australian Cattle Dog ( ACD). He got his name because he came home on the 4th of July in 2003.

Trained with Catchers on the Fly Flyball Club and debuted in 2005. Early on he showed drive and determination to challenge limits of ACD performance.

He was the first ACD to run sub 4.0 seconds with a 3.973. Oddly he ran identical 3.973s for both Alan and Kathy on the same day. The record stood for 3 years. He remains the second fastest ACD in U-FLI history.

Indy developed a twitch… when released he would do a 360 before beginning his dash to the box. This inconsistency drew the attention of many of the most talented trainers in UFLI and despite many well-intentioned efforts Indy spun his way to his 20K plaque. He has been voted most entertaining dog to watch on several occasions.

As he advances in age Indy seldom runs, but is a reliable backup for the team and pack leader for the Daniels brood.

More about Libby ...

Libby is the Daniels’ second ACD. She arrived in April of 2005. Interestingly with the name of Liberty she has the RUN number of 1776.

She is small for a ACD and measured at 8”, so she was used as a height dog for much of her more competitive career. After settling into her groove, she became by far one of the more consistent, run by anybody, in any position competitor. When Catchers’ teams traveled with less than a full complement of handlers, volunteers, who became Libby’s best friend as soon as she discovered they carried her favorite treat after her trip down the lane, handled Libby often.

Her utility has always been her greatest contribution. She still runs a 5.0  and remains active having settled in as the #2 ACD with over 50K points. She makes room for newer or faster teammates these days but is always ready to earn a treat. As a start dog she has posted many 000s, and nearly runs herself it seems

More about Boss ...

Boss was born in Chicago, IL and came from the Chicago Canine Rescue.
He has earned titles in sic (6) dog sports:

  • Flyball
  • Obedience
  • Rally
  • Agility
  • Weight Pull
  • Tracking.
Flyball

Boss has earned perfect scores and High in Trial awards in rally. This little 40 pound boy wonder has pulled more than 2000lbs on rails in weight pull. In UKC, he earned a High in Trial award in agility at the Gateway National competition. In AKC, he is competing at the Master level towards his MACH.

He is the first dog of any hound breed to be awarded a Super Dog title by UKC (earned by titling in agility, obedience, and weight pull).

No doubt about this little dude is BOSS!

Heidi My first Flyball dog

By Alan Daniels

Heidi never played Flyball, she never had the chance!

Heidi
She was a mutt from a box of  puppies at a local farm. Some said she was a McNabb /Labrador /Border collie mix. I just knew she looked like the dogs I saw having a romping good time at the first Flyball Tournament I witnessed looking through a fence at Hidden Valley Obedience Club playground in Escondido in the spring of 2003.

Her first few experiences with humans were not all that nice. She was eeking out an existence living under the floor of a storage shed when she became my savior dog. Just walking with Heidi helped me discover the canine human connection and we both benefited as we traversed San Diego County on day hikes. As a result of our outings and that chance encounter at a flyball tournament, we were waiting for the ‘training’ classes to start with Catchers on the Fly. Fate intervened.

Heidi Died a Hero

Heeling at my right side on a hike on one of the many morning hikes we took at Daley Ranch in Escondido, she was struck by a rattlesnake. If she had not been closely heeling, it would have been my calf as the target rather than her thigh. I hope to see her  again at the Rainbow bridge.

What is Flyball

Flyball it is one of the fastest growing canine sports in the country. There are two sanctioning leagues; the United Flyball League International (U-FLI™) and the North American Flyball Association (NAFA®). Our dogs compete in both leagues, however we primarily compete in U-FLI™.

Flyball is relay racing for two teams of 4 dogs each. The dogs run a straight course over 4 hurdles to a spring-loaded box that holds a ball. They make a 180 degree turn off the face of the box while catching the ball. When they first hit, the ball is propelled out of the box, making it easy to tun and catch the ball in one smooth rotation. The dogs then return over the same hurdles to their handler. As they cross the finish line, the next dog on that team passes the returning dog and proceeds down the lane. After each dog completes the cycle the race is over. The fastest team with no errors wins the race. more about Flyball ...

Video 1: Anna doing a run and a box turn at practice. You can see her turn in slow motion to show how she catches the ball and turns off the box. We call that a Swimmer's Turn.

There are many flyball teams in the US and Canada. Catchers on the Fly is one of the oldest teams in Southern California. We have competed successfully in several International Championships. Four of our team dogs are the top 25 highest point earning dogs in all of the U-FLI™ league. One of them being the "Top Dog" (highest titled dog of all time).

Flyball Titles

Points are earned by the over-all team time. The faster the team finish time the more points the dogs earn.

Classes / Practice

We are always looking for motivated team players and their dog companions. COTF invites you to monitor a practice on any given Sunday. If you contact us first at info@catchersonthefly.org, we will meet you 30 minutes before team practice begins to introduce you to flyball basics. All dogs should:

    1. Be well socialized, leashed and know basic obedience skills. Bring a crate if you plan to stay a while.
    2. Have a favorite toy with them. A tug toy works best.
    3. Be ready to be tested on their recall and retrieval abilities.

After observing a flyball training session, you may wish to join in as a temporary COTF member. After six weeks of training . . . you decide . . . we decide on full membership.

Be sure to contact us first before planning to visit as there may be conflicts with travel and tournament schedules that may interfere with practice. Practices are held:
